Golfers could keep their eye on the ball and enjoy the surrounding scenery. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. This lens, located behind the iris, works just like the lens of a camera — focusing light images on the retina, which sends images to the brain.
How has your daily business been impacted?
The human lens can become so clouded, it keeps light and images from reaching the retina. It may also be why the reading glasses or bifocals that used to help you read or do other simple tasks no longer seem to help. Vision with cataracts has been described as seeing life through old, cloudy film.
Eye injury, certain diseases, or even some medications can cause the clouding. The best way to treat a cataract is with surgery that removes the old, clouded lens and replaces it with a new, artificial one to restore your vision, and in many ways, significantly improves your quality of life. Presbyopia is the condition in which the lens of the eye loses its ability to focus at near. Have you ever found yourself holding a menu or a book farther and farther away to read it?
The need for reading glasses is usually a sign of presbyopia. This aging of the eyes eventually affects everyone. Sometimes the surface of the cornea is curved more like a rugby football than a basketball, with both flatter and steeper curves. This occurs when light rays are not focused at one spot to provide clear vision. The important thing to remember is that cataract surgery can often correct one or more of there at the same time.
This means it may be possible for you to gain clear vision with little or no need for glasses or contact lenses. Huge medical advances have been made in the treatment of cataracts. Cataract surgery is generally a simple, outpatient procedure with little discomfort, requiring only 15 minutes and a topical anesthetic. Through this incision, the surgeon inserts an instrument about the size of a pen tip. This instrument breaks the cloudy lens into pieces and removes them from the eye. Once the cataract is removed, a cataract replacement lens is inserted through the same tiny incision and set into position to replace the natural lens.
Most patients typically return home the very same day as cataract surgery. Eye drops may be prescribed to guard against infection and help your eye heal. For a few days, you may need to wear an eye patch to keep away irritants. Everyone heals differently, but most patients see well enough to return to most of their routine activities within a few days of recovery. An intraocular lens IOL is the replacement lens that is surgically implanted in the eye to replace the existing clouded lens during cataract surgery.
Traditionally, the replacement lens used for cataract surgery was a monofocal IOL. This type of lens restored good functional distance vision, but people still needed to continue wearing reading glasses. Dont believe the hype — the Symfony lens may have the same rates of haloes and glare as other multifocal lenses. However, experts agreed that the Symfony adds to the options for patients with presbyopia, particularly those for whom intermediate-range vision is paramount.
Standard monofocal IOLs provide clear vision only at one range. Multifocal IOLs are divided into sections that simultaneously focus light differently for different ranges. The sections that are out of focus sometimes cause haloes. At the same time, it corrects chromatic aberration to enhance contrast. That has raised the possibility that the Symfony could offer the best of both worlds: good vision at multiple ranges without haloes or glare. But how does it compare to multifocal lenses in similar patients?
Unable to find any head-to-head studies, Mary Attia, MD, from the Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany, and colleagues analyzed three groups of patients: two using multifocal lenses and one using the Symfony.
All three IOLs are available in Europe. The Symfony was approved for sale there in June The patients receiving the FineVision had a median age of 66 years, those receiving the ReStor had a median age of All three performed well at long distances. The Symfony also excelled at a distance of 80 cm. On average, the recipients of the three types of lens gave them similar ratings for haloes, about in the middle of a 0 to 10 scale, where 10 is so bad patients would not consider driving.
There was a trend toward better glare ratings for the Symfony, but Dr Attia did not present calculations on statistical significance for this measure. Patients implanted with the Symfony were more likely to report needing glasses for seeing at far distance than patients implanted with either of the other types of lens, and more likely to report needing glasses for reading than the patients implanted with the ReStor SN6AD1.
Dr Attia did not provide statistical significance for this comparison, either. Clinicians should talk to their patients about the pros and cons of each lens before implanting them, Dr Attia said. For occasional, brief reading tasks, all the IOLs in the study might work without reading glasses, she said. More recently, he has successfully tried blending the Symfony with other IOLs as well. In the discussion that followed these presentations, some experts said they preferred to aim for emmetropia with the Symfony, and others for a slight plus correction.
